History – From the Bahnhöfli Restaurant to a modern city hotel

The history of the house of Wartmann is one of a hospitality business whose care has been passed on from father to son for over 100 years. From its humble origins it has grown into the modern city hotel it is now – an achievement of which today's fourth generation is very proud.

1st generation

Emil Wartmann buys the property at Paulstrasse 2 and sets up the Bahnhöfli Restaurant.


A Munich-style beer hall is opened on Paulstrasse.


The factory building next door is torn down, making space for building a new beer hall (today's Theatersaal).

2nd generation

Eugen Wartmann represents the 2nd generation entering the business.


The pub is renamed Wartmann Restaurant and the great Theatersaal with its stage is added to it.


Despite rather difficult times, optimism remains intact and the business is continuously expanded and developed further.


The restaurant is extended and two garden terraces are added.

3rd generation

3. Generation


Werner and Madeleine Wartmann-Lieb take charge in the 3rd generation.


The property at Rudolfstrasse 13 is bought and then converted into a hotel with 22 beds.


The legendary Kutscher Bar is opened.


Purchase of the property at Rudolfstrasse 15; the Wartmann Hotel with 50 bedrooms and 70 beds is built.


The Wartmann Restaurant is renovated and refurbished; it now consists of the Grill Stube (barbecue restaurant), the Wy Chäller (wine cellar), the Gartensaal (garden hall) and the Theatersaal (theatre hall).


With Rolf Wartmann, the 4th generation enters the business.


Refurbishment of the reception area; the Kutscher Bar is turned into the Spiegel Bar.


The Wartmann Hotel is newly built; it now has 72 bedrooms and 120 beds and boasts the vegetarian restaurant Zur Waage, the Grill Restaurant, a bar and seven halls.


Opening of the modern ***city hotel offering 4-star comfort. The new rooms have 4-star standard, the older rooms have been renovated.

4th generation

4. Generation


Rolf Wartmann becomes the director of the Hotel Wartmann AG.


The daytime restaurant and the Spiegel Bar are renovated.


The vegetarian restaurant Zur Waage receives a facelift.


32 older bedrooms are modernised and thus made brighter and more welcoming.


The Grill Restaurant is redesigned.


The Garden Restaurant on Rudolfstrasse is renewed.


The Wartmann family actively participates in the planning of the project "Haus des Lebens ("House of Life") that is to be brought to life on the plot of land at Paulstrasse 2 at the corner of Rudolfstrasse.


The Hotel Wartmann AG parts with the property at Paulstrasse 2 at the corner of Rudolfstrasse with the Grill Restaurant and the Theatersaal. The remaining buildings are converted; the vegetarian restaurant Zur Waage is newly opened as Gleis 11 Restaurant and now boasts a bar.

30 September 2005

Rolf Wartmann buys the Hotel Wartmann AG from his father, Werner Wartmann.


In summer, the 32 Standard bedrooms are modernised and equipped with soundproof windows and all stairs and corridors are renovated.


The courtyard is redesigned.


In January, the 40 Superior bedrooms are remade and renovated. The Argentina Steakhouse is opened in the locality of the Gleis 11 Restaurant.


After a comprehensive façade restoration and redesign and a full renovation of all rooms, the Wartmann Hotel opens its doors again as member of the Best Western Group under the name of Hotel Wartmann am Bahnhof at the end of June.
